Can overseas buyers purchase a home in New Zealand?

Common question · Overseas Investment Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

Generally, overseas persons can't buy existing residential homes in New Zealand, because of rules introduced in 2018 under the Overseas Investment Act 2005.

Australian and Singaporean citizens are generally exempt, and New Zealand residence-class visa holders who meet certain criteria may also be able to buy.

Some exceptions also apply for new apartments in large developments.

Rules can change, so check the Overseas Investment Office's website and get legal advice before committing.
