How do I complain about a news story?

Common question · Defamation & Media Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

In New Zealand, complaints about news and current affairs usually start with the publisher or broadcaster directly, through their complaints process.

If you're not satisfied, complaints about newspapers, magazines and many digital publishers can go to the New Zealand Media Council. Complaints about TV and radio can go to the Broadcasting Standards Authority.

These bodies consider standards such as accuracy, fairness and privacy. They're free, but they can't award damages.

If a story is false and damaging, a lawyer can advise whether a defamation claim is possible.
