How do I complain about my bank?

Common question · Banking & Finance Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

Start with your bank's internal complaints process, in writing, and keep records.

If it isn't resolved, or it's been more than about two months, you can take the complaint to the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, which is free and independent. Other lenders belong to schemes such as Financial Services Complaints Limited or the Insurance & Financial Services Ombudsman.

These schemes can make decisions that are binding on the bank up to set limits, and you can still go to court if you don't accept the outcome.

Scam losses, unfair fees and lending decisions are common complaints. The scheme's website explains what it can help with.
