How do I get a protection order in Australia?
Common question · Family Violence & Protection Orders · Australia · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
Each state and territory has its own family violence protection orders, such as Apprehended Violence Orders in NSW, Intervention Orders in Victoria and Domestic Violence Orders in Queensland.
Police can apply for you, or you can apply to the local or magistrates court. Urgent interim orders may be available.
Orders can stop the other person contacting you or coming near you, and protect children.
