How do I make a natural hazard claim for my home?
Common question · Earthquake & Natural Hazards Claims · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
If your home is insured in New Zealand, it's generally also covered by the Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake (formerly EQC) for damage from earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal activity and tsunami, and for storm or flood damage to residential land.
Lodge your claim with your private insurer, who usually manages it for both the Commission and its own policy. Claim as soon as possible, because time limits apply.
Take photos, make the property safe, and keep receipts for urgent repairs.
The Natural Hazards Commission's website explains what's covered and how claims work.
