How do I make an Official Information Act request?
Common question · Administrative & Government Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
Under New Zealand's Official Information Act 1982, you can ask government departments, ministers and many public bodies for information they hold. Requests to councils are made under a similar act.
Make your request clearly, and it doesn't have to be in writing. The agency must respond as soon as reasonably practicable, and within 20 working days, although it can extend the time in some cases.
Information can be withheld only for reasons set out in the Act. Agencies can sometimes charge for large requests.
If you're unhappy with the response, you can complain to the Ombudsman, which is free.
