How do I patent an invention in New Zealand?
Common question · Intellectual Property · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
A patent protects a new invention that involves an inventive step and is useful. In New Zealand, you apply to the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ).
Don't publicly disclose your invention before filing, because public disclosure can stop it being considered new.
A provisional application gives you a filing date and 12 months to file a complete application. A granted patent generally lasts up to 20 years, with renewal fees.
Patent law is technical, so most inventors use a registered patent attorney.
