I disagree with an Inland Revenue assessment. What can I do?
Common question · Tax Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
New Zealand has a formal disputes process for tax assessments. If Inland Revenue proposes an adjustment, it issues a notice of proposed adjustment, and you generally have two months to respond with a notice of response.
If you want to challenge an assessment yourself, you usually need to issue your own notice of proposed adjustment within set time limits.
Disputes can go through conference and adjudication within Inland Revenue, then to the Taxation Review Authority or the High Court.
The deadlines are strict, so talk to a tax adviser or tax lawyer early.
