What does the Waitangi Tribunal do?
Common question · Treaty of Waitangi / Māori Land Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
The Waitangi Tribunal is a permanent commission of inquiry that hears claims by Māori that the Crown has breached the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi.
It mostly makes recommendations to the government rather than binding decisions, although it has binding powers in some limited situations.
Historical claims, about Crown actions before 21 September 1992, had to be lodged by 1 September 2008. Claims about more recent Crown actions can still be made.
The Tribunal's website explains how claims work, and lawyers specialising in Treaty claims can advise.
