What should a farm lease include?
Common question · Agribusiness & Rural Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
A farm lease in New Zealand should clearly set out the land, the term and renewal rights, rent and rent reviews, and what the land can be used for.
It should also cover who's responsible for maintenance of fences, buildings and water, fertiliser and pasture standards, stock limits, and environmental obligations.
Make sure it addresses what happens at the end of the lease, including the condition the land must be returned in.
A rural lawyer can prepare or review a lease, and industry bodies have template agreements.
