Who can legally give me immigration advice in New Zealand?
Common question · Immigration · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
In New Zealand, immigration advice can only be given by a licensed immigration adviser or by someone who's exempt, such as a New Zealand lawyer with a current practising certificate.
You can check whether an adviser is licensed on the Immigration Advisers Authority's public register. It's an offence for an unlicensed person to give immigration advice, even overseas, unless they're exempt.
Be wary of anyone who guarantees a visa, asks you to provide false information, or holds onto your passport.
Licensed advisers must follow a code of conduct, including giving you a written agreement and clear information about fees. If you have a complaint, you can make it to the Immigration Advisers Authority.
Immigration New Zealand's website has free information on visas, and some Community Law Centres can help.
