Guide for lawyers

Finding your first clients as a sole practitioner (NZ and AU)

Most new sole practitioners find their first clients the same way: people they already know, and people who find them when they search. Here are the channels worth setting up first.

People who already know your work

Tell former colleagues, clients and contacts that you have started, and say exactly what you do. Referrals work best when people can describe you in one sentence.

Professionals who meet your clients first

  • Accountants, who meet people when business and family decisions arise.
  • Real estate agents and mortgage brokers, for property work.
  • Financial advisers, for wills, trusts and estates.

Being found when someone searches

  • A simple website that says what you do, where, and how people can reach you.
  • A Google Business Profile with your real address or service area.
  • A listing on directories that people search, including Lawmateanz.

Keep to your regulator's advertising rules

Advertising rules differ between New Zealand and each Australian state or territory, and some states restrict advertising for certain kinds of work, such as personal injury. Check your regulator before you publish anything.

How it works for lawyers

  • Free to list, and your first client match is free.
  • After that, a flat monthly fee. No commission and no share of your fees.
  • We check practising certificates before anyone is listed.

Client requests depend on demand in your area and are not guaranteed.
