Property lawyer and conveyancing fees in New Zealand
When you buy or sell property in New Zealand, a lawyer or licensed conveyancer handles the legal side and settlement. Here's how those costs are made up, so you can compare quotes properly.

Know this first
Get the fee information in writing, and have a lawyer look at a sale and purchase agreement before you sign it.
Lawyer or conveyancer?
Both lawyers and licensed conveyancing practitioners can handle a property transfer. A lawyer can also advise on wider issues, such as trusts, relationship property, unusual contract terms or a dispute.
How fees usually work
Conveyancing is commonly quoted as a fixed fee, plus disbursements such as search and registration costs. Ask for the fee information in writing and check what's included. It's also worth having a lawyer look at a sale and purchase agreement before you sign it.
Your right to know the costs up front
New Zealand lawyers must give you written information before they start work, including the basis on which their fees will be charged and when payment is due. Fees must be fair and reasonable. If you're unhappy with a bill, raise it with the lawyer first; you can then contact the Law Society's Lawyers Complaints Service.
Questions to ask first
- Is this a fixed fee or hourly? If hourly, what is the rate and roughly how many hours do you expect?
- What is included, and what would cost extra?
- Which costs are disbursements or official fees, and roughly how much are they?
- How often will I be billed, and can I get an update on costs as we go?
