ACC declined my claim. What can I do?

Common question · ACC & Accident Compensation Claims · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

If you disagree with an ACC decision, such as declining cover or stopping your payments, you can apply for an independent review. Reviews are carried out by a reviewer who is independent of ACC, and they're free.

You generally need to apply within three months of the date of the decision. A late application can sometimes be accepted if there's a good reason for the delay.

It helps to ask ACC for the reasons for the decision and a copy of your file, and to consider getting further medical evidence. ACC sometimes reconsiders a decision before the review hearing.

If you disagree with the review decision, you can appeal to the District Court.

Free help is available from ACC advocacy services and Community Law Centres, and some lawyers specialise in ACC claims.
