What does ACC pay if I can't work after an injury?

Common question · ACC & Accident Compensation Claims · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

If an injury covered by ACC stops you working, you may get weekly compensation of up to 80% of your earnings before the injury, up to a maximum amount that ACC sets each year. It's taxed like normal income.

For a work injury, your employer usually pays the first week. For an injury outside work, ACC generally doesn't pay for the first week, although some employers do.

You'll need a medical certificate from your doctor or another health provider confirming you can't work. Payments continue while you're unable to work, and ACC will work with you on getting back to work.

Self-employed people can also get weekly compensation, but it's worked out differently.

ACC's website explains the rules. If you disagree with how your payments were calculated, you can ask for a review.
