Can I challenge a team selection decision?

Common question · Sports Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

In New Zealand, you can only challenge a selection decision if your sport's rules allow it, usually through an internal appeal process.

If the rules allow, some selection disputes can then go to the Sports Tribunal of New Zealand. The tribunal looks at whether the selection policy was followed fairly, not whether you should have been picked.

Appeal deadlines are often very short, so check the selection policy straight away.

The Sports Tribunal's website has guidance, and a lawyer with sports experience can help.
