Who pays if I'm injured playing sport?
Common question · Sports Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
In New Zealand, sports injuries are usually covered by ACC, which can help with treatment, rehabilitation and weekly compensation if you can't work.
Because ACC covers personal injury on a no-fault basis, you generally can't sue another player or a club for compensation for a covered injury.
Serious foul play may still lead to disciplinary action by the sport, and in some cases criminal charges.
Lodge an ACC claim through your doctor or physio.
