Can I get a limited licence if I've been disqualified?

Common question · Traffic & Driving Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

In New Zealand, if you're disqualified from driving by a court, you may be able to apply for a limited licence. It lets you drive for set purposes, such as work or medical appointments, during the disqualification.

You generally have to show that the disqualification would cause extreme hardship to you, or undue hardship to someone else. The court looks at your driving history and the reasons you need to drive.

A limited licence isn't available in every situation. For example, it isn't usually available for some repeat or serious offences, or for suspensions under the demerit points system.

If granted, it sets strict conditions on when, where and why you can drive. Breaking those conditions is an offence.

A lawyer can tell you whether you're eligible and help prepare the application and supporting evidence.
