How many demerit points before my licence is suspended?
Common question · Traffic & Driving Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
In New Zealand, if you get 100 or more demerit points within any two-year period, your licence is suspended for three months.
Demerit points come with many traffic offences, such as speeding. The number depends on the offence. Speed camera fines generally don't come with demerit points, but speeding tickets issued by an officer do.
When you reach 50 or more points, you'll usually get a warning letter. Points stay on your record for two years from the date of each offence.
Once a suspension ends, the points that led to it are cleared. Driving while suspended is a serious offence and can lead to longer disqualification.
You can check your demerit points with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi. If you dispute an infringement notice, you can request a hearing in the District Court.
