Can my employer monitor my emails or install cameras at work?
Common question · Privacy & Data Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
Employers in New Zealand can carry out some monitoring, but they must follow the Privacy Act 2020. That means collecting information only for a lawful purpose connected with the business, and being open about it.
Employees should generally be told what monitoring happens and why, for example through a workplace policy. Covert monitoring is only justified in limited situations.
Cameras shouldn't be placed in private areas such as toilets or changing rooms.
If you're concerned, raise it with your employer or union. The Privacy Commissioner has guidance and accepts complaints.
