How do I get the information an organisation holds about me?

Common question · Privacy & Data Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

Under New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to ask any business or organisation for the personal information it holds about you.

Make the request clearly, in writing if possible. The organisation must respond as soon as possible, and within 20 working days, although it can extend the time in some cases.

Information can be withheld only for specific reasons set out in the Act. Most private organisations can't charge you for making a request.

If you're refused or ignored, you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner, which is free. The Commissioner's website has a free tool to help make requests.
