Do I need a special licence to serve alcohol at an event?

Common question · Alcohol Licensing · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

In New Zealand, if you're selling alcohol at an event, or the event is open to the public, you'll usually need a special licence from the District Licensing Committee.

Apply well in advance, as councils recommend at least 20 working days before the event.

Private events where alcohol is free and not sold usually don't need a licence.

Your council can confirm what applies and has application forms.
