What licence do I need to sell alcohol?

Common question · Alcohol Licensing · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

In New Zealand, selling alcohol requires a licence under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012. There are on-licences (bars and restaurants), off-licences (bottle stores and supermarkets), club licences and special licences for events.

Applications go to your local District Licensing Committee through the council. Police, the medical officer of health and licensing inspectors report on them, and the public can sometimes object.

Licensed premises must also have a certified duty manager on duty when alcohol is sold.

Your council's licensing team can explain local policies.
