Does our society need to re-register under the new law?

Common question · Charities & Not-for-Profit Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

Under New Zealand's Incorporated Societies Act 2022, existing incorporated societies had to re-register by 5 April 2026 to stay incorporated.

Societies that didn't re-register by the deadline are removed from the register and stop being incorporated, which can affect their assets and contracts.

If your society missed the deadline, contact the Companies Office about your options, and get legal advice about what happens to the society's property.

The Companies Office website has guidance and templates for constitutions under the new Act.
