How do we register as a charity in New Zealand?
Common question · Charities & Not-for-Profit Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
To register as a charity in New Zealand, your organisation applies to Charities Services, part of the Department of Internal Affairs, under the Charities Act 2005.
You must have exclusively charitable purposes, such as relieving poverty, advancing education or religion, or other purposes that benefit the community, and a set of rules or governing document.
Registered charities can apply for tax exemptions and donee status, but must file annual returns and meet reporting standards.
Charities Services' website explains the process, and Community Law Centres or a charities lawyer can help.
