How do I challenge a Work and Income decision?

Common question · Disability Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

If you disagree with a Work and Income decision, such as a benefit being declined or reduced, you can ask for a review of decision. You generally need to apply within three months of being told about the decision.

First, Work and Income looks at the decision again internally. If it isn't changed, a Benefits Review Committee, which includes a community representative, reviews it.

If you still disagree, you can appeal to the Social Security Appeal Authority, and then to the courts on points of law.

You can bring a support person or advocate. Beneficiary advocacy services and Community Law Centres offer free help.
