How do I get a copy of my medical records?

Common question · Medical Negligence & Health Complaints · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

In New Zealand, you have a right to ask for your health information under the Health Information Privacy Code. Ask the provider who holds it, such as your GP or the hospital.

They must respond as soon as reasonably practicable, and within 20 working days. Public health providers generally can't charge you, and private providers can only charge in limited circumstances.

Access can be refused only in limited situations, for example if releasing the information would be likely to seriously harm your health.

If you're refused or have to wait too long, you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner.
