How do school enrolment zones work?

Common question · Education Law · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

Many New Zealand state schools have an enrolment scheme, often called a zone, to manage overcrowding. If you live in the zone, your child is entitled to enrol.

Out-of-zone places are offered by ballot if available, with priority given to certain groups, such as siblings of current students.

Giving false information about your address to get into a zone can lead to the enrolment being cancelled.

The Ministry of Education's website has zone maps and enrolment information.
