What happens if a teenager is charged with an offence in New Zealand?
Common question · Youth Justice · New Zealand · 23 October 2026
General information from Lawmateanz
Most young people aged 14 to 17 who offend are dealt with through the youth justice system, which focuses on accountability and putting things right. Children aged 12 and 13 can be charged with some serious offences.
Many cases are handled by Police alternative action, such as an apology or reparation, without going to court. More serious cases go to a family group conference and may go to the Youth Court.
In the Youth Court, a youth advocate (a lawyer) is appointed free of charge.
Outcomes in the Youth Court often don't result in a criminal conviction. Community Law Centres can help explain the process.
