Will a Youth Court case give my child a criminal record?

Common question · Youth Justice · New Zealand · 23 October 2026

General information from Lawmateanz

Usually not. Most Youth Court outcomes don't result in a conviction, and if the case is dealt with through a family group conference plan, the charge may be discharged as though it was never laid.

For the most serious offending, or where a young person is transferred to the District Court, a conviction can be entered.

Youth Court proceedings are generally private, and there are restrictions on publishing identifying details.

A youth advocate is appointed free of charge and can explain the possible outcomes.
